SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University made the most of it's second straight home meet on Thursday and Friday, posting several personal records, conference and nationally-ranked marks and event victories at the Buc Scoring Invitational.
The Pirates got four event victories on the men's side, none more impressive than Solo Hines in the 200-meter dash. His time of 21.53 is a personal record and currently ranks fourth in NCAA Div. III. Hines also went 10.75 to finish second in the 100-meter dash, a time that ranks 13th in DIII.
Daniel Watts posted a score of 5,921 to win his first decathlon of the season, his PR by nearly 350 points.
Zaanan Bane won the men's 110-meter hurdles in 16.11 and Jack Ireton finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a PR of 9:38.56. James Dugenet (9:45.03) finished second in the steeplechase.
It wasn't an event win, but Kainoa Figueira went 1:54.73 in the men's 800-meters, his personal record and the 8th-best time in Division III this season.
In the field, Eddie Vu finished fourth in the discus (149'-1") and sixth in the shot put (47'-1.5"). Riley Flanagan went a season-best 21'-0.75" in the long jump.
Whitworth's women also won four events, including a mark of 47.89 in the 4x100-meter relay.
Abby Crossley ran unopposed in the steeplechase and still had a PR of 11:47.70.
Amblessed Okemgbo won the discus with a distance of 141'-5" and took fourth in the shot put with a PR of 41'-4.25". Isabella Pereira won the triple jump with a mark of 35'-7.25".
Some of the non-victories might have been more impressive, beginning with a runner-up finish for Bree Rawls in the heptathlon. Her score of 4,379 is a PR by 200 points and ranks second in DIII this season.
Amelia Hewson went 14.76 in the 100-meter hurdles, her season-best mark and the 5th-fastest time in Division III this season. Lily Jones finished sixth in the 800 meters with a PR of 2:17.56 that ranks 9th in DIII.
Natalie Ellis was runner-up in the javelin throw (121'-2") and Brianna Tira finished third in the long jump (16'-8.5").
Whitworth will be back in action on Saturday March 30th at the Pacific University Open in Forest Grove.
