Whitworth wins team titles at UPS Boitano Invite

TACOMA, Wash. – Led by its dominating throwing crew, Whitworth's men and women took home the team titles this weekend at the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by Puget Sound. 

The Pirate women won three of the four throwing events, while the men won two.  Whitworth's women won six total events, while the men won four.

Renee Tiumalu won the women's shot put (42-1.5) and took third in the women's discus (120'-7").  Amblessed Okemgbo finished first in the discus (127-7) and fourth in the shot put (38-9.75). 

Devyn Chelin won the women's javelin throw in her first meet as a Pirate with a toss of 133'-4", leading a crew of four Pirate scorers in the event.  Natalie Ellis (112'-6") was third, Logan Spencer (111'-4") was fourth and Emily Brown (109'-9") was fifth.

Also in the field, Brianna Tira went 16'-4.5" to win the long jump. 

Whitworth's women won two events on the track.  Breanna Rawls won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.83.  Alison Ball took first in the 100-meter dash (12.41) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (26.34). 

Abby Crossley as the runner-up in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:51.82.  Lily Jones took second in the 800-meters in 2:26.33. 

The Pirate women scored 138 points to finish first among 16 teams.  Western Washington (92) was second and Puget Sound (90) was third.

Alex Smith won the men's shot put with a distance of 42'-11.75" and took third in the discus (124'-11").  Meanwhile Eddie Vu won the discus (145'-6"), took fourth in the shot put (41'-1.75") and sixth in the hammer throw (124'-7").  Cody Wheeler, usually a javelin specialist, was second in the hammer throw (140'-2") and third in the shot put (41'-10.5").

Daniel Watts won the men's high jump, clearing 6'-0.5".   On the track Whitworth won the men's 1600-meter relay.  Watts, Kainoa Figuiera, Cameron Lantagne and Cooper Rolfs went 3:29.03.

Riley Flanagan was runner-up in the triple jump (41'-1") and third in the long jump 20'-11.25"). 

Whitworth's men scored 149 points, ahead of Western Washington (84) and Pacific Lutheran (78) in the 16-team field.

Solo Hines will compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships next weekend before Whitworth hosts the Sam Adams Classic on March 16th.
