Pirates soar in first home outdoor meet of 2024

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates won five events each by the women and the men on Saturday afternoon at the Sam Adams Classic on Boppell Track in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

It was the first outdoor home meet of the season for the Pirates and featured student-athletes from Washington State, Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and the Community Colleges of Spokane.

Amelia Hewson and Alison Ball each won a sprint event and were part of the winning 4x100 relay.  Hewson won the 100 hurdles in 14.97, while Bree Rawls took third in 15.67.  Later Ball won the 200-meter dash in 25.17, not far off her team record of 25.02.  Both were on the winning 4x100 relay that opened the meet with a time of 47.85.

Jordan Lungo was also on that relay and she led four Pirate women among the top-8 finishers in the 100-meter dash.  Lungo took second in 12.31, while Hewson was third (12.5) and Isabella Periera was fourth (12.78).  Brianna Tira was seventh in 13.03.

Abby Crossley closed the meet with a winning time of 18:35.57 in the 5,000-meters.

Renee Tiumalu won the women's shot put with a toss of 44'-0.75", while Amblessed Okemgbo was runner-up in the discus (143'-3") and Pereira was runner-up in the triple jump (36'-9.5").  Devin Chelin took second place in the javelin (125'-5") and Rawls took third in the high jump (5'-4.5").

Whitworth's men also had a big day in the field.  Cody Wheeler unleashed the javelin a distance of 216'-9" to win by four feet and he also took third in the hammer throw (143'-3").  JJ Martin cleared 6'-6.75" to win the high jump.  Eddie Vu was third in the shot put (46'-6.75"), fifth in the hammer (138'-9") and sixth in the discus (140'-5").

On the track Alex Peters went 15:18.94 to win the 5,000.  Zaanan Bane won the 110 high hurdles in 15.92 and took fourth in the triple jump (44'-6").  Like the women, the men's team also won the 400 relay in 42.85.

The Pirates also had a couple of strong runner-up finishes.  Daniel Watts went 56.03 in the 400 meter hurdles, while Kainoa Figueira posted a time of 1:55.94 in the 800-meters.  The Bucs closed the meet with a time of 3:27.13 to take second in the 4x400 relay.
