Pirate men show improvement at Bulldog Invite

REDLANDS, Calif. – After struggling out of the gate in the first round, the Whitworth men's golf team improved significantly over each of its next two rounds to finish in a tie for tenth place on Tuesday at the 2022 Bulldog Invitational, hosted by the University of Redlands at the Redlands Country Club.

The Pirates were 22 over par after Monday's first round, but improved that score by eight strokes in the second round on Monday afternoon.  The Bucs then shot 283 (+3) during Tuesday's final round.  Redlands rallied from eight strokes behind in the final round to win its own tournament by a stroke.

The final team scores were: Redlands 843, Willamette 844, Schreiner (Texas) 845, Pomona-Pitzer 847, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 849, Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 854, Cal Lutheran 856, Arizona Christian 857, La Verne 859, Whitworth and Menlo 879, Hope International 888, Whittier 898, Redlands B 929.

Sam Pauly (74-75-67) and Matthew Durkin (77-67-72) each shot 216 (+6) to finish in a tie for 25th place, out of 81 individuals.  Acikalin Leon of Arizona Christian was the individual medalist with a final total of 199 (-11).

Oliver Nordberg posted a score of 72-80-72 – 224 to tie for 55th.  Gabe Cach (79-74-72 – 225) tied for 60th.  Sullivan Menard (80-78-81 – 239) finished in 76th place.

Whitworth will be back in action this weekend (Sept. 24-25) at the Linfield Wildcat Invitational in McMinnville, Oregon.
