EUGENE, Ore. – Lauryn Rawls improved her mark in the discus by over six feet on Friday night at the Oregon Twilight and dramatically improved her chances to qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the process.
Rawls had the top performance among five Pirates who competed in the meet on Friday.
Rawls finished sixth in the event's final standings after hurling the discus 43.42 meters on her final throw. More importantly, her converted mark of 142'-5" is over six feet further than her previous best distance of 136'-3" two weekends ago at the NWC Championships. It moves her into the top 16 of the current NCAA Division III leaders.
Amelia Hewson had Whitworth's top individual finish. She took second place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.38, which was not quite as fast as her season-best mark (14.19).
Abbie Jo Carlson fouled on all six attempts in the women's hammer throw.
On the men's side, Reed Hurst finished third in the men's discus throw with a mark of 150'-7". He was off his season-best of 156-1.
Solo Hines took fourth place in the men's 100-meter dash in 10.98, one-tenth of a second behind his season-best mark.
Several other Pirate athletes will compete in the Portland Twilight and Linfield Open on Saturday.
