MOSCOW, Idaho – Amelia Hewson finished second in the women's 60-meter hurdles with the second-fastest time in Whitworth history on Saturday afternoon at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open on the campus of the University of Idaho.
Hewson led a solid performance by the Pirate indoor track and field athletes. After qualifying third in the morning's preliminary heats in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.24, Hewson went 9.03 in the finals to finish second. Her time is second only to her school record of 8.24 set two seasons ago.
Madelyn Buckley finished third in the mile run with a time of 5:24.81. She also was 8th in the 800-meter run in 2:27.36.
McKenzie Ward and Alison Ball took 8th and 9th in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.09 and 1:02.49, respectively.
Xavier Bettancourt finished sixth in the men's 400 dash with a time of 51.46, while Kainoa Figueira was 9th in 51.97. That pair led the Pirate men to a third place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:32.01. Joseph Tingstad and Jalen Martin filled out that relay.
Samson Irish-Lodge posted a distance of 43'-10" to finish third in the men's triple jump.
Whitworth will return to action on Feb. 4 at the Washington State Open in downtown Spokane at the Podium Indoor facility.
