GREENSBORO, N.C. – Whitworth's Nick McGill is in 11th place after the opening day of the decathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of UNC-Greensboro.
He has 3,480 points through the first day, which is only three points shy of the total he had after the opening day of the NWC Decathlon four weeks ago. He went on to win that event with a career-best score of 6,838 points.
The day started a little slowly. McGill's time of 11.64 in the 100-meter dash was 17th out of the 17 competitors. He went 20'-11.25" in the long jump, which was the 12th-best mark among the decathletes.
McGill's best finish of the day came in the shot put, where he posted a distance of 41'-9.75", the third-best among the decathletes.
He cleared 6'-3.25" in the high jump and posted a time of 52.28 in the 400-meters.
Marcus Weaver of Wis.-Eau Claire leads after the first day with 3,848 points, nearly 100-points ahead of Taylor Phillips of GFU who has 3,766 points.
McGill will continue the decathlon on Friday. The top eight finishers score and earn All-America recognition. McGill will also compete in the javelin throw on Friday.
