SPOKANE, Wash. – Eddie Vu took advantage of his opportunity on Wednesday at the Whitworth Last Chance Meet, likely earning his spot at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this month.
Vu hurled the discus 174'-11", a new personal record that won the event. More importantly for the near future, his mark is now ranked 8th in NCAA Division III.
Adam Sessions had a chance to improve on his mark in the hammer throw, but came up just short. He finished fourth in the event with a distance of 185'-11". His season-best of 188'-8" is still 18th in NCAA Division III.
Amblessed Okemgbo and Madison Carr, who are already safely in the NCAA Championships, still competed and won their events. Okemgbo won the women's discus with a throw of 159'-0". Her PR of 161'-7" is second in the nation. Carr won the women's hammer throw with a distance of 170'-3". Her best of 180'-1" is fifth in Division III.
The women's shot put was deep in talent with the top eight finishers all reaching 40 feet. Okemgbo took third in 46'-11.5" while Carr was sixth (44'-7.5"). Both already had top-five marks in the country.
A student-athlete needs to be ranked among the top 22 in the nation at the end of the season to qualify for the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place May 21-23 in Lacrosse, Wis.
Bella Tolen won the women's 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 12.46. Briana Tira was runner-up in the women's high jump, clearing a season-best height of 5'-3.75".
A handful of Pirate athletes will compete on Friday at the University of Oregon.
