SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth track and field team competed in the Buc Scoring Invitational on the Boppell Track on Friday as the Pirates continued to prepare for the Northwest Conference Championships taking place in less than two weeks.
The NWC Combined Events, hosted by Pacific Lutheran University, take place on May 3-4 in Parkland, Washington. The Pirates host the Whitworth Twilight Invite on May 5th, the final meet before traveling to the NWC Championships (May 13-14).
Amelia Hewson placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 14.98, .22 seconds faster than her previous best. The sophomore also beat her personal best 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.50 for sixth place. Jordyn Lungo placed seventh (12.60) and Alison Ball was eighth (12.61 PR) in the 100m. Ball finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.00) and Lungo was eighth (26.47 PR).
Marisol Delcid and Carmen Winslow-Gonzalez both improved on their season-bests in the 400-meter hurdles. Delcid placed seventh (1:09.33) and Winslow-Gonzalez finished eighth (1:09.69 PR).
Delcid, Ball, Lungo and Hewson won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 49.16.
Lexi Caniglia improved on her 800-meter run time by over three seconds, finishing in 2:21.55 (12th). Ellie Shoop placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in a time of 12:16.02, while Madelyn Buckley took eighth (12:20.89 PR).
Monica Kaylor placed second in the high jump, clearing 5' 3.75" to improve on her previous best by ½". Devyn Cope finished seventh in the triple jump (33' 8.75").
Tallie Carlson set a career-best in the hammer, throwing 148' 9" for seventh place, while AbbieJo Carlson finished eighth (145' 00"). Saylor Anderson placed fifth in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 118' 10". Keara Simpson placed sixth in the discus (131' 1" PR) and eighth in the shot put (37' 9.50"). Renee Tuimalu finished ninth in the shot put with a career best mark (37' 8.75").
On the men's side, Samson Irish-Lodge, Kolby Blackler, Logan Wright and Riley Flanagan posted the Pirates' best 4x100-meter relay time of the season, finishing in 42.86 for second place.
Wright posted a NWC-qualifying time in the 100-meter dash, improving on his previous best with a time of 11.35 to place 10th. Kainoa Figueira ran the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 51.12 for fourth place, the Pirates' best time of the season in the event. Blackler finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.02).
William Glick recorded a top Pirate time in the 800-meter run, finishing in fifth (1:55.17). Joel Mott set a career best in the 5,000-meter run, finishing in 15:22.47 for eighth place. Gregory Anderson took eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in a personal-best time of 10:23.19.
Irish-Lodge posted a career best in the triple jump, finishing in fourth with a mark of 43' 7.75". Flanagan placed sixth in the triple jump with a personal best (43' 5.75"), while Blackler took seventh (42' 7.50").
Luke Davis placed second in the discus (148' 3") and Reed Hurst finished third (141' 9"). Hurst had another top-five finish in the shot put, taking fourth with a career-best throw of 47' 5". Benjamin Brinkley finished fourth in the javelin (171' 1").
Three Pirates finished among the top eight in the hammer throw. Stephen Haugland placed fourth (170' 1"), Ignacio Garcia took fifth (155' 1") and Malachi Areta finished sixth (154' 10"). Garcia and Areta threw career bests.
