SPOKANE, Wash. – Kolby Blackler set another career-best in the 110-meter hurdles, Nick McGill won the javelin and Monica Kaylor tied for first place in the high jump as the Whitworth track and field team hosted the Sam Adams Classic on Saturday.
Adam Cassidy competed in the decathlon at the Bigfoot Multis on Thursday and Friday, finishing with 4,667 points to add a sixth conference qualifier for the Pirates in the event.
Blackler made his way back into the nation's top-20 in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.85 for third place, .17 seconds faster than his previous best. McGill won the javelin with a season-best mark of 193' 9" and placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 15.58. Kaylor finished in a tie for first in the high jump, clearing a career-high 5' 3.25". She also set a new personal best in the triple jump (32' 5.50").
Xavier Betancourt placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.70), Blackler took sixth (1:02.29) and Nathan Dykstra finished seventh (1:02.56) to add on to a long list of conference qualifiers in the event.
Travis Herrera took third in the pole vault, clearing 14' 3.50", and fourth in the long jump with a career-best mark of 21' 4.25". The senior placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.47).
Blackler, McGill, Herrera and William Glick won the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:26.73.
Adam Callahan set a personal best in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:56.92 for fifth place, the top Pirate time this season. Joel Mott set a career-best in the 1500-meter run, finishing in 4:07.95 to add a fifth NWC-qualifier for the Pirates in the event. Caleb Grode also improved in the 1500m, finishing in 4:09.73.
Luke Davis continued his streak of discus improvements, topping his career-best for the fifth consecutive meet with a 147' 00" mark to place sixth. Reed Hurst was the top Pirate finisher in the shot put, placing ninth (42' 3.25"). Stephen Haugland placed fifth in the hammer throw (164' 9") and Malachi Areta finished sixth (149' 6" PR). Benjamin Brinkley placed fourth in the javelin (166' 10") and Nathan Dykstra took fifth (151' 2 PR).
Samson Irish-Lodge placed second in the triple jump (43' 6.50") and Riley Flanagan finished third (42' 3.50" PR).
Amelia Hewson placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.32), sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.68) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (25.89). Jordyn Lungo now holds the top Pirate 100m time after crossing the finish line in a career-best time of 12.59 for fifth place. Alison Ball set personal bests in the 100m (12.75) and 200m (25.80), placing fourth in the 200.
Madison Peffers, Ball, Lungo and Hewson recorded a time of 48.75 in the 4x100-meter relay, a top-16 national time.
Madelyn Buckley took fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 12:46.73 in her first attempt at the event, which is a NWC-qualifying time. Ellie Shoop placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 19:19.59.
Devyn Cope placed second and reached a NWC-qualifying mark in the triple jump (34' 4.25"), competing in the event for the first time. She also competed in the high jump, clearing 4' 9.50" for seventh place.
Lauryn Rawls crushed her previous best in the discus and recorded the top mark of the season for the Pirates, throwing 133' 6" for third place.
Keara Simpson improved in the shot put for the third straight meet, throwing 38' 0.75" for ninth place. Renee Tiumalu (36' 8.25") and Rachel McGlothlen (36' 5.50") reached conference-qualifying marks in the shot put. McGlothlen's toss was a personal best. Eva Millan placed fifth in the javelin with a 117' 6" throw and Saylor Anderson finished sixth with a personal-best mark of 114' 1" to add another NWC-qualifier in the event.
