Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound completed a non-conference baseball sweep of visiting Whitworth on Sunday by taking both halves of a doubleheader, 4-3 and 9-4.
The Pirates (0-3) will look to pick up their first victory of the season March 6-7 during a four-game non-conference set at George Fox University.
Game 1 – Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 3
The Pirates trailed 4-0 through six innings before rallying to within one run late in the game. Dylan Joyce threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve the win for the Loggers.
Brenden Duncan's two run home run, the first of the season for the Pirates, pulled his squad within 4-3 in the eighth inning. Gage Gibson had scored an unearned run on Joe Howell's fielder's choice in the seventh to get Whitworth on the board. Howell led the team with two hits, the only Pirate with more than one.
UPS scored first on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Strash that scored Davis Miller in the third. The same pair combined on the same play again in the fifth, one batter before Jonas Kim hit a two-run home run for a 4-0 Logger lead.
Brett Thomas started on the hill for the Pirates and allowed four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Josh Grimes threw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits and a walk.
Owen Shellha started for the Loggers and picked up the win with six innings of shutout pitching, allowing four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Joyce tossed 1.2 innings at the end of the game for his first save.
Game 2 – Puget Sound 9, Whitworth 4
The Pirates jumped ahead for the first time in the series, taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. But the Loggers put four runs across in the bottom of the seventh and won going away.
Duncan's RBI single scored Ethan Schulte in the top of the first, staking the Bucs to a quick 1-0 lead. The Pirates trailed 2-1 when Schulte added an RBI single to tie the game in the fourth and Jaxsen Sweum followed with a sacrifice fly to score Gibson.
After Mitchell Nab tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, the Loggers jumped ahead 7-3 in the seventh with four runs. Jackson Boli had a two-run single in the rally.
Duncan's bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth got Whitworth back within 7-4, but UPS added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half.
Dylan Bishop started on the mound for Whitworth and allowed two runs on four hits in three innings. Six Pirates followed in relief. Evan Norden was credited with the loss.
Schulte and Duncan each had a pair of hits for the Pirates.
Chris Pullen was the starting pitcher for UPS and went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Three relievers followed and Jackson Dink was the winner with 1.1 innings of work.
