Baseball Drops Its Season Opener

TACOMA, Wash. – Dylan Joyce hit two of Puget Sound's four home runs and Nathan Blocher drove in six runs to lead the Loggers to a 20-3 win over Whitworth in the season-opening baseball game for both teams on Saturday morning.

Puget Sound broke the game wide open by scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh and seven runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Blocher finished with a double, triple and a home run (grand slam) in his first collegiate game.  Joyce hit his home runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

After Blocher helped the Loggers jump out to a 5-0 lead with his grand slam, Whitworth got within 5-3 in the top of the sixth before UPS pulled away again.

Brenden Duncan led the Pirates at the plate, going 4-5 with three doubles.

Austin Rice (0-1) started on the mound for Whitworth and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in three innings.  Three relievers followed.

Davis Miller (1-0) started for UPS and allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings.

Whitworth and Puget Sound will play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11:00 am.
