Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Sage Dunaway and Gavin Bullock combined on a five hitter to lead Pacific University to an 8-1 win over visiting Whitworth, giving the Boxers a Northwest Conference baseball series victory over the Pirates.
Whitworth (11-5, 4-2 NWC) will try to bounce back at home next weekend against visiting Willamette University.
Pacific (9-7, 7-2) scored all the runs it would need in the first inning as Tyler Quinn hit a leadoff solo home run and Ryan Krout drilled an RBI single. The Boxers scored in the first inning of all three games in the series. Tanner Johnson added RBI singles in the second and fourth innings to help his squad increase the lead to 5-0.
Pacific broke open the game with three runs in the fifth, thanks in part to a Pirate error. After a walk and a double by Krout, the first run scored on an error at third base. The second run scored on an RBI single and the final run came across on a bases-loaded double play.
Jaxsen Sweum's RBI single in the sixth helped Whitworth avoid the shutout.
Dunaway went six innings as the starter and allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk. Bullock tossed three innings of one-hit relief for his first save of the season.
Tyson Yamane (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits in four innings. Brett Thomas threw four innings of shutout relief for the Bucs.
No Pirate player had more than one hit in the game.
