TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring 13 runs over the final three innings of a 14-1 non-conference baseball victory on Saturday at the University of Puget Sound.

The Pirates (26-14) and Loggers (9-29) are Northwest Conference rivals, but scheduled a non-conference game at the end of the regular season.

Taylor Poffenroth's two-run double gave Whitworth a 3-1 lead in the seventh.  Tyler Bailey and Ben Wintringer added RBI singles in the eighth for a 5-1 advantage.

The Pirates poured nine runs across in the ninth inning against a pair of UPS pitchers.  Casey Isa and Joe Howell had back-to-back two-run doubles to get the rally going.  J.J. Fahnlander capped it with a three-run double as Whitworth sent 13 batters to the plate.

Mathew Pulliam (2-1) picked up the pitching victory in relief of Brett Thomas.  Thomas allowed only one run on three hits in the first 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and three walks.  But the game was still knotted at 1-1 when he left, so Thomas did not factor into the decision. Pulliam tossed 3.1 hitless innings of relief, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Michael Warnick (1-5) started for Puget Sound and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits in seven innings to absorb the loss.

Fahnlander finished 3-4 with three RBIs.  Wintringer went 4-5 with a pair of runs batted in.  Isa and Poffenroth also drove in three runs apiece.

Whitworth will conclude the regular season with a pair of games on Sunday.  The Pirates play at Pacific Lutheran at 12:30 pm and then take on Whitman (at PLU) at 3:30 pm.  Both will also be non-conference contests.
