Pirates Notch Walk-Off Win, Take Series From GFU

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spencer Ansett dazzled for Whitworth on the mound with an 8 ⅓ innings performance and the Pirates rallied to win in the ninth inning, collecting two hits and taking advantage of two defensive miscues by George Fox to capture a walk-off victory Sunday at Merkel Field.

Whitworth (10-6, 4-2 Northwest Conference) earned its first series win over the Bruins (7-9, 5-4) since the 2011 season.

Tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Joshua Davis led off with a single and pinch-hitter Paul Miller followed with a base hit to advance Davis to second base. An attempted sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Druffel was mishandled by George Fox catcher Ansel Webster and Druffel reach on the error to load the bases.

Joel Condreay then hit a ground ball to third base with the infield drawn in, but the throw to home plate from George Fox third baseman Riley McKean sailed over the head of Webster, allowing Davis to score in walk-off fashion.

The Bruins had threatened to take the lead in the top of the ninth, stringing together back-to-back singles with one out off Ansett. Carson Blumenthal entered the game to replace Ansett and needed to face just one batter, inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Davis hit his conference-leading sixth home run of the season in the first inning, which had given Whitworth a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins tied the game in the third inning after Kadyn Nannini led off with a double and later scored on a base hit by Zach Rapacz.

Ansett took the tough no decision, allowing one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. He set down 11 Bruins in a row before allowing back-to-back singles in the ninth inning. Blumenthal earned the win, improving to 1-0.

George Fox starter Taylor Dunn pitched eight strong innings, holding Whitworth to a run on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. He retired the Pirates in order in four of his eight innings pitched. Tom Zarosinski relieved Dunn in the final frame and took the loss.

Davis finished 2 for 3 with a walk while Condreay, Miller, Nate Lamberty Lamberty and Skyler Lookabill each had a hit for Whitworth.

The Pirates travel to western Washington next weekend to face Pacific Lutheran in a three-game series. The series will begin Saturday, March 14 at noon.
