Mack Shines as Pirates Complete Sweep of Loggers

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Cory Mack took a shutout into the ninth inning and pitched the first complete game of the season for Whitworth while the offense produced 14 hits in completing a series sweep of Puget Sound with an 11-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Merkel Field.

Whitworth (14-8, 8-4 Northwest Conference) moved up one spot to third place in the NWC standings with its fourth-straight victory. The Loggers (10-11, 8-5) dropped to fourth place in the conference standings following the sweep.

Mack (2-2) worked efficiently, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and holding the Loggers to six hits through the first seven innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter, marking the third consecutive game in which the Whitworth pitching staff has not surrendered a walk. Puget Sound struck for three runs on four hits in the ninth inning but Mack finished the game, throwing 91 pitches in the outing.

Offensively, Dalton Carter provided a spark right away for Whitworth by hitting a triple down the right-field line to begin the bottom of the first inning and scoring via a RBI groundout from Jeremy Druffel.

Carter and Joshua Davis were each hit by a pitch in the third inning to put runners on first base and second base for Nick Motsinger, who delivered with a RBI single down the left-field line. Thomas Wakem then followed with a double to right field, scoring Davis and building the lead to 3-0.

Similar to the second game of the series on Saturday, the Pirates continued to score consistently and pull away in the late innings. Whitworth doubled its lead in the fifth inning as Carter singled and Druffel followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Davis delivered a run-scoring single to bring home Carter and a sacrifice fly from Joel Condreay later in the inning scored Druffel. Brett Moser brought home Davis with a two-out single, extending the lead to 6-0.

Spencer Locati doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and scored on a single by Druffel for a 7-0 advantage. The Pirates continued to score with two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings.

A double by Condreay began the seventh inning and Moser walked before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Nate Lamberty scored Condreay with a sacrifice fly and Moser came home on a single by Locati.

The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning and scored a run on a fielder's choice from Garrett Hughes before Moser delivered a two-out, RBI single.

Carter was 2 for 4 with three runs scored while Druffel was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Moser finished 2 for 3 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored to help lead the Pirates. 10 Pirates had at least one hit in the win. Whitworth scored double-digits runs for the third time in the past four games.

Nick Funyak was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Loggers.

The Pirates travel to Whitman for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday before heading to Oregon to face Lewis & Clark in a four-game series on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
