Whitman Takes Series Finale From Whitworth

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Starting pitcher Will Thompson held visiting Whitworth to two runs over seven innings pitched and a three-run double from Anthony Lim led Whitman in a 5-2 victory over the Pirates during Sunday's series finale at Borleske Stadium.

Whitman (2-8, 1-5 Northwest Conference) snapped a six-game losing streak and avoided the series sweep following losses of 8-1 and 29-6 on Saturday. Whitworth (7-4, 2-1) had its six-game win streak snapped.

The Pirates scored the first run of the day in the second inning when Thomas Wakem brought home Jeremy Druffel with an RBI single. Druffel had tripled with one out, his second three-bagger of the weekend.

The Missionaries responded to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Lim hit a bases-loaded double to left-center field with two outs, clearing the bases. A walk, double and intentional walk had loaded the bases for Lim.

Whitman extended the lead to 5-1 during the fourth inning, loading the bases once again with a pair of walks and a base hit. Paul Heywood delivered a two-RBI single off reliever Michael Renner, who had entered the game during the inning in relief of Whitworth starter Cory Mack.

Whitworth cut into the deficit in the sixth inning as Joshua Davis doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Druffel, cutting the lead to 5-2. The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs later in the frame but a groundout ended the threat.

Mack (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits, striking out one and walking six in 3 ⅓ innings. Tyler VonDracek pitched 4 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

A day after the Pirates set a school record for runs scored in the second game of the series, Thompson (2-0) scattered eight hits over seven innings, striking out one and walking three to pick up the win. Henry Lin pitched two scoreless innings of relief to record the save.

Druffel was 3 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI to lead Whitworth.

Lim finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Missionaries.

The Pirates return to action Wednesday, traveling to Central Washington University for a non-conference doubleheader. Whitworth continues conference play next weekend, hosting George Fox in a three-game series.
