Box Score Kerrville, Texas - Whitworth used a pair of five-run innings and totaled 17 hits in completing the series sweep over Schreiner with a 14-8 win on Sunday morning in Texas.
Whitworth (5-3) scored 14 runs for the second consecutive game and eleven Whitworth hitters had at least one hit against Schreiner (2-8).
The Pirates jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, collecting four hits and taking advantage of two Schreiner errors. Jeremy Druffel, Thomas Wakem and Paul Miller each had RBI singles in the inning.
Whitworth added another run in the second inning before striking for five runs in the fifth. Three singles to begin the fifth inning loaded the bases for Skyler Lookabill, who delivered a two-RBI single. Garrett Hughes followed with an RBI double before Joshua Davis brought home Lookabill with a sacrifice fly. Hughes scored on a defensive miscue by the Mountaineers as the Pirates opened an 11-0 lead.
Schreiner scored once in the sixth inning and added four runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 11-5 before Whitworth scored three times in the eighth inning.
Nick Motsinger led off the eighth inning with a double and later scored on a double by Carson Blumenthal. Casey Isa singled to put runners on first and third before Zach Thibault delivered a two-RBI triple.
Schreiner matched the Pirates with three runs in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to further close the gap as Michael Renner pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the lead.
Miller was 3 for 6 with one RBI and a run scored for Whitworth. Motsinger went 2 for 4 with two walks and three runs scored while Lookabill was 1 for 2 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Thibault (2-2, two RBIs), Hughes (2-3, two runs, RBI) and Brett Moser (2-5, run) also helped lead the Pirates offensively.
Whitworth starter Nick Scourey (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings and earned the win.
The Whitworth offense continued its hot start to the season in Texas, totaling 47 runs over the four-game series. The Pirates opened the series with an 18-11 win Friday before topping the Mountaineers 1-0 and 14-5 in Saturday's doubleheader. Whitworth has scored at least five runs in all but one game this season.
The Pirates begin the Northwest Conference schedule with a three-game series at Whitman next weekend. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28.
