Kerrville, Texas - Whitworth swept Schreiner in a doubleheader Saturday, taking the opener 1-0 in a pitchers' duel before rolling to a 14-5 victory in the nightcap to clinch the series win.
Whitworth (4-3) will have a chance for the sweep against Schreiner (2-7) when the teams face off in the final game of the series on Sunday morning.
JT Phelan had four hits on the day while Joshua Davis and Garrett Hughes each homered in the nightcap for Whitworth.
Game 1: Whitworth 1, Schreiner 0 (7 innings)
Dan Scheibe pitched six dominant innings and Phelan's RBI triple in the fourth inning provided the lone run as Whitworth edged the Mountaineers in the opener.
Phelan tripled with two outs in the fourth inning, his second of three hits in the game, to score Davis who had walked earlier in the inning.
Schreiner threatened to tie the game in the fifth inning after Bret Hill led off with a triple. A second runner reached via a hit by pitch, but Scheibe then recorded three consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.
Scheibe (2-0) struck out 10 batters, allowing just three hits and one walk to earn the win. Carson Blumenthal relieved Scheibe in the seventh inning and stranded the tying run on third base to earn the save.
Jayme Kidder reached safely on a dropped third strike to begin the seventh inning for Schreiner, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and reached third base on an error. But Blumenthal fanned Quinton Volovar for his third strikeout of the inning to secure the win for Whitworth.
Phelan finished 3 for 3, accounting for three of Whitworth's four hits in the game. Thomas Wakem was 1 for 2.
Kidder threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and one walk for Schreiner.
Game 2: Whitworth 14, Schreiner 5
Davis and Hughes each homered in a six-run fourth inning as Whitworth earned its second come-from-behind win in the series.
Jeremy Druffel's sacrifice fly gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Schreiner responded, scoring four runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
Trailing 4-1 entering the fourth inning, Phelan and Joel Condreay each singled to begin the frame. Nate Lamberty singled to score Phelan before Hughes connected for a three-run home run. Three batters later Davis delivered a two-run home run, his third of the season.
Lamberty and Hughes each had RBI singles in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 8-4, and the Pirates added another run in the sixth inning before tacking on three more in the seventh frame. Hughes highlighted the seventh inning with a two-RBI triple.
Dalton Carter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to score Lamberty for Whitworth's final run of the game.
Nine Pirates recorded at least one hit in the victory. Hughes led the Pirates with six RBIs and two runs scored. He was 3 for 4 at the plate with a walk and finished a double shy of the cycle. Lamberty was 3 for 3 and walked twice, scoring four runs and recording two RBIs. Davis (2-6, two RBIs, run) and Skyler Lookabill (2-5, RBI, run) also had multi-hit games.
T.J. Orchard picked up his first win, throwing 4 ⅓ innings in relief of starter Cory Mack. Orchard struck out eight batters, allowing only one run and one hit.
