Whitworth Tops Schreiner in Series Opener

Box Score

Kerrville, Texas - Spencer Ansett pitched five strong innings and the Whitworth offense set season-highs for runs and hits en route to an 18-11 win over Schreiner University on Friday afternoon in Texas.

Whitworth (2-3) overcame an early deficit with seven runs in the third inning and added four more runs in the next frame. The Pirates built the lead to 18-4 before Schreiner (2-5) rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trailing 3-0 entering the third inning, five consecutive hitters reached safely with one out. Dalton Carter provided an RBI single with the bases loaded to open the scoring and Joshua Davis followed with a bases-loaded walk. Two errors from Schreiner and singles from Joel Condreay and Nick Motsinger helped the Pirates add five more runs.

Garrett Hughes was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single by Skyer Lookabill. Jeremy Druffel delivered a two-RBI single later in the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Condreay to give Whitworth an 11-3 lead.

The Pirates added a run in sixth inning and three more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Davis.

Whitworth continued to find offensive success with a three-run ninth inning. The Mountaineers rallied with five hits and took advantage of three Whitworth errors in the bottom of the ninth to lessen the deficit.

Carter finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Davis was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs while Druffel was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Lookabill and Paul Miller each had two hits to give the Bucs five players with a multi-hit game.

Ansett (1-0) allowed three runs over his first two innings on the mound but did not allow a hit after the second inning and retired the final seven batters he faced. Tyler VonDracek, Taylor Hillmick and Carson Blumenthal combined in the relief effort.

The Pirates totaled 17 hits in the game. Friday's scoring output continued a hot start to the season for the offense, as the Pirates have scored at least five runs in each game this season.

The Pirates and Mountaineers face off Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. The teams will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
