Box Score 3 TACOMA, Wash. – A long day of went and chilly baseball ended with visiting Whitworth taking two of three from host Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference series on Sunday at Curtis High School.
Jeremy Druffel led the way with five RBIs for the Pirates (5-6 overall, 2-1 NWC), who won the completion of Saturday's game 9-3 and took the finale 2-1. The Loggers (5-8, 3-3) won the middle game 9-4.
Game 1 – Whitworth 9, Puget Sound 3 (completion of Saturday's game)
Gerhard Muelheims and Jeremy Druffel each drove in a pair of runs to lead Whitworth to the series-opening win.
The game had been suspended because of rain after three innings on Saturday with the Loggers ahead 2-1. But the Pirates outscored UPS 8-1 on Sunday morning. Whitworth took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. They put the game out of reach with three more in the ninth frame.
Michael Renner and Taylor Isadore each threw three innings in relief of starter Carson Blumenthal. Renner (2-1) got the win after giving up only one run on three hits. Isadore picked up his second save, allowing no runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Game 2 – Puget Sound 9, Whitworth 4
The Loggers took advantage of six hits and three Pirate errors to score eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Cory Mack was sharp on the mound for six innings. He allowed only a single run on three hits through the first six frames. But the wheels came off for Mack and the Whitworth defense in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff home run by Nathan Backes. Five more hits and the three errors led to seven more runs for the Loggers.
Mack fell to 1-2 this season. Druffel had two more RBIs in the game.
Game 3 – Whitworth 2, Puget Sound 1 (called after eight innings due to darkness)
Spencer Ansett earned his first victory this season on the mound and Jason Renner was strong in relief as the Pirates claimed the darkness-shortened finale.
Ansett piched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked one. Renner gained his third save by tossing the final 2.2 frames without allowing a run. He struck out four Loggers and walked two.
Whitworth scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning. Druffel's RBI single proved to be the game-winning hit.
Whitworth will play a non-conference game at Central Washington on Wednesday before hosting Pacific Lutheran for three games next weekend.
