Whitman Sweeps Whitworth in Non-Conference DH

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Visiting Whitworth dropped a pair of non-conference baseball games at NWC-member Whitman on Tuesday night.

The Missionaries grabbed the opener 9-3 and held off the Pirates 5-4 in the nightcap.  Whitman improved to 13-13-1 while Whitworth fell to 6-14. The Pirates will host George Fox for a three-game Northwest Conference series this weekend looking to snap a six-game losing streak.

Game 1 – Whitman 9, Whitworth 3
Cameron Young hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to help the Missionaries grab a 7-1 lead.

Jimmy Madden had three hits and scored two runs for Whitman, while Ozzy Braff had two hits and also scored twice.  Garrett Hughes had an RBI for the Pirates.

Nick Scourey (1-2) started on the mound for the Bucs and took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits in two innings.  Hector Zavala threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief before AJ Milyard gave up Whitman's final two runs in 1.1 innings.

Will Thompson (1-2) earned the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on only two hits over seven innings.  Eli Mathieu went the final two innings for Whitman.

Game 2 – Whitman 5, Whitworth 4
Whitworth rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Jonny Chow scored the winning run for the Missionaries on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

Aaron Cohen opened the game with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning for Whitman before the Pirates pulled within 3-1 on an RBI double by Garrett Hughes in the top of the third.  The Missionaries extended the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the third on a sac fly by Paul Heywood.

Hughes drove in Whitworth's next run with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, then Matt Nelson scored on a fielding error later in the inning.  Justin Liu tied the game in the seventh after leading off the inning with a double, moving to third on a wild pitch, then scoring on a passed ball.

Josh Davis went 2-3 and scored twice for the Bucs.  Cohen led both teams with three RBIs for Whitman.

Michael Renner started for Whitworth and allowed four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.  Dan Scheibe threw 3.2 innings of hitless relief with seven strikeouts in his longest outing of the season.  Tyler VonDracek (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh and Jason Renner pitched the eight for the Pirates.

Sterling Spilinek started for Whitman and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings.  Nick Johnson (1-1) was the winner with two innings of scoreless relief.
