Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth tied a single-game school record with 19 three-pointers during an 84-43 win over visiting Wells College on Monday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates closed their non-conference schedule with a 7-2 record and riding a five-game winning streak.  The Express, from Aurora, N.Y., fell to 1-9 this season.

Christian Jurlina had five of Whitworth's three-pointers and Matt Staudacher had four.  The Pirates finished the game by making 61% (19-31) of their shots from beyond the arc.  The Bucs tied a record originally set in 2009-10 against Pacific (Ore.).

"I thought today we played really well on both sides of the ball," said head coach Matt Logie. "Our ball movement was crisp, which was great considering we played our fourth game in seven days."

Whitworth never trailed, jumping out to leads of 11-4 and 22-8 after made three-point baskets.  Jurlina's layup gave the Pirates their first 20-point lead (33-13) and Staudacher hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer to give Whitworth a 39-15 lead at the break.

The Pirates were especially effective in the second half against a tired Wells defense.  They shot 61.5% (16-26) from the field and 81.8% (9-11) from three-point range.  The Bucs steadily extended their lead throughout the half and Whitworth demonstrated its offensive efficiency with 22 assists on 29 overall baskets.

Jurlina scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.  Staudacher added 14 points, while Derek Isaak had 11 and Riley Moreen scored 10 – both off of the bench.  Kenny Love dished five assists and Taylor Farnsworth blocked four shots.  Whitworth finished with a 38-26 advantage in rebounds.

Jordan Jean scored 13 points for Wells, while Shakeel Simmons grabbed six rebounds.  Joe Walton had five assists for the Express, who were held to 36% (19-53) overall from the field and the 36% (4-11) from three-point range.

Whitworth will now turn its attention to Northwest Conference play.  The Pirates open their conference schedule at Willamette and Lewis & Clark on January 2-3.
