Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Rylan Berriman scored twice and eight Whitworth players recorded at least one goal or assist as the Pirates bounced back convincingly from their first loss of the season with a 6-1 win over Whitman on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (10-1-1, 5-1-1 NWC) moved into a first-place tie with Willamette atop the standings while Whitman fell to 6-6-0, 3-4-0.
Whitworth took a 2-0 lead to halftime, before breaking out with four goals in the second half.
Berriman put the Pirates ahead in the 7th minute, taking a long pass from Spencer Wolfe and catching the Whitman goalkeeper off his line. Berriman received the pass and had a shot at an open net after dribbling around the keeper just inside the box.
Jonah Snyder scored his first career Whitworth goal in the 40th minute, finishing in a crowded box on an assist from Kash Choudhary.
Choudhary added a goal of his own in the second half, as Micheal Ramos sent in a cross from the right side. Choudhary headed the ball home in the 64th minute, increasing the lead to 3-0 and joining Snyder by also scoring his first career goal on Saturday.
Berriman netted his second goal of the day on an assist from Sam Engle in the 67th minute before the Missionaries took advantage of a misplayed ball on the Whitworth back line in the 73rd minute as Marcos Medina scored for Whitman.
Ramos answered the Whitman goal less than a minute later, dribbling from right to left across the box and scoring on a slightly-deflected shot for his 11th goal of the season. Engle recorded his second assist of the game on the play, which developed quickly following the Whitman goal.
Sam Donaldson added a goal in the 85th minute, his first career Whitworth goal as well, on an assist from Chris Rothrock.
Timmy Costa made three saves before being replaced in the second half by Shane Nishioka-Healy, who recorded one save. Stuart Ellsworth made eight saves for the Missionaries.
The Whitworth offense brought consistent pressure to the Whitman defense, generating 24 shots, including 15 shots on goal. The Missionaries had five shots on goal from 13 total shots.
Head coach Morgan Cathey commented on the strong response the Pirates showed following their first loss of the season against Puget Sound last weekend.
"The scoreboard shows what it does, but more than that you saw every single guy do everything he could to be successful on the day, and I love that," Cathey said.
The Pirates recorded their second-best statistically-successful scoring match of the season against Whitman, recording six goals -- each of which was assisted. Whitworth came within one goal and of tying a season-high mark set during a 7-1 win over George Fox earlier this season. The Pirates set a new season-high for assists with six.
Choudhary and Ramos each recorded a goal and an assist, while Engle assisted two goals to compliment Berriman's two-goal game.
"Unselfish play -- it was very unselfish and that's why different guys were rewarded," Cathey said. "I'm very, very happy to coach a group that showed how selfless they were on the field today."
Whitworth will travel to the west side of Washington next weekend to face off against the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University.
