SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth football closed out its spring practices on Saturday, May 2 with the annual Spring Fling at the Pine Bowl.
With roughly 200 fans, families, alums and recruits on hand, the team participated in a variety of events for a great day of competition, fun and fellowship. Following the event, Logan Lacio (QB), Caleb Cabrera (OL), Drew Cody (LB) and Omari Williams (DB) were announced as 2026 team captains as voted on by their peers.
Lacio, a senior from Palolo, Hawaii, started all 11 games at quarterback last season. He threw for 2,496 yards and 19 touchdowns, earning second team All-Northwest Conference recognition.
Cabrera, a senior from Bruien, Washington, played in all 11 games and was a key part of the offensive line group.
Cody, the lone junior captain from Puyallup, Washington, will anchor the middle of the Pirate defense after a sophomore campaign. He earned first team All-NWC recognition after recording 106 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble.
Williams, a senior from Seattle, Washington, will lead the back end of the Pirate defense. Last season, he earned d3football.com second team All-Region and first team All-NWC honors after recording 50 tackles, two interceptions and nine pass breakups.
Several more off-season awards were presented to members of the team at the conclusion of the event. Head Coach Rod Sandberg re-iterated that the off-season was about being committed to excellence and these awards honored those individuals that stood out all winter and spring in their effort, training and commitment to the team.

Coach Sandberg had this to say about the Spring Fling: "What an incredible day. The weather was gorgeous and it was so great seeing our players compete, encourage each other, and have fun. We have an amazing coaching staff here and they did an amazing job of putting all the work in to make this happen today. It was a great culmination of not only 5 weeks of Spring Football, but an entire semester of hard work and our players choosing to live the standard. We have a vision of this program to be life changing, and it is many little things, like today, that allow that to happen."
