SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University claimed a hard-fought 4-3 win over visiting Linfield in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Sunday at Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (9-4 overall, 8-2 NWC) swept the season series over the Wildcats (5-12, 5-6 NWC) with four singles wins.
In a competitive doubles session, Linfield came away with the first point of the match. Connor Judson and Matthew Morrison earned a 6-3 win on the No. 3 court, before the Wildcats earned a pair of wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 court. Ryan Ashley and Henry Preacher fell 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker and Matt Froslan and Matt Hossack fell 7-5.
The Bucs regrouped and secured four of six singles wins, two of which came in three sets. Preacher (6-3, 6-1) secured the first singles win for Whitworth before Cameron Paulsen regained the advantage for Linfield with a three-set win over Ashley. Morrison fought for a 6-7(1-7), 6-3, 6-4 three-set win to tie things up. Froslan followed it up with a 6-2, 6-3 win on the No. 5 court. After Judson dropped a three-set match to Wildcat Joey Henderson, the match was up to Hossack. Hossack split the first two sets before claiming a 6-1 win in the third set to secure the Whitworth victory. Hossack and Preacher each extended their singles match winning streaks to four.
The Pirates will head to Oregon for the final time next weekend to visit George Fox and Lewis & Clark on April 3-4.
