Softball drops final Texas DH at TAMUSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Whitworth softball wrapped its non-conference trip to Texas with two losses to NAIA opponent Texas A&M-San Antonio on Tuesday afternoon.

The Jauguars (9-3) won their sixth straight game and posted double-digit runs in each of the last three contests. The Pirates (0-6) have the upcoming weekend off before jumping into Northwest Conference play at Lewis & Clark on March 7-8.

Game 1: Texas A&M-San Antonio 12, Whitworth 1 (5 inn.)

Despite an early Whitworth lead, TAMUSA attacked Pirate pitching and rolled to a game one win.

Camryn Sage got things going at the plate for the Bucs with a two-out double in the first inning. Teeghan Reams hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped and allowed Sage to score the game's first run.

The Jaguars responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the first to tie the game. In the second, they took a one-run lead following a fielder's choice and advancement.

Whitworth had a chance to tie in the third when Reagan Ellis lined a base hit into left field, but Sage was thrown out at the plate.

After scoring a pair of runs in the third to go up by three, the Jaguars broke the game open in the fourth, scoring eight runs and grabbing a 12-1 lead. TAMUSA strung hits together throughout the inning, including a pair of two-run doubles and a two-run single that pushed the game out of reach.

Whitworth loaded the bases in the top of the fifth but was unable to trim the deficit.

The Bucs finished with five hits and showed discipline at the plate with seven walks. Five different players had a hit with Reams and Reagen Hofheins each drawing a two walks.

Reams (0-2) started in the circle and pitched all four innings.

Krisilyn Corral earned the win for the Jaguars, finishing with six strikeouts, six walks and one run. Skylar Ramos pitched the final inning.

Game 2: Texas A&M-San Antonio 11, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.)

The Jaguar bats stayed hot while Sari Travis shut down the Pirates at the plate.

TAMUSA scored three runs in the first with an RBI double, advancement on a throw, and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. Another run crossed in the second before three more in the third. An error, bases-loaded walk and RBI single resulted in four runs in the fourth to give the Jaguars an 11-0 advantage that Whitworth could not minimize.

Kendel Sage, Tessa Hahn and Makena Hofford were the only Pirates to record a hit in the game, two of which came in the top of the fifth.

Trinity Miller (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings in the circle for Whitworth and Lina Schwippert entered for 1.1 innings of relief.

Travis finished with two strikeouts, no walks, no runs and three hits in five innings for TAMUSA.
