Pirates fall twice in NWC softball opener at L&C

PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitworth softball opened the 2026 Northwest Conference schedule with a pair of losses to Lewis & Clark on Saturday at Huston Sports Complex.

The Pirates (0-8 overall, 0-2 NWC) fell 6-3 in game one before an 8-0 five-inning loss in game two. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11:00 am.

Game 1: Lewis & Clark 6, Whitworth 3

Maggie O'Leary limited the Pirate offense and Lacey Marglin's three-run triple in the fourth inning pushed the River Otters to a win.

Lewis & Clark scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with a two-run single off the bat of Harper Campanella.

The Bucs answered with a run in the third. Kendel Sage walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Camryn Sage hit an RBI single to right-center field.

The Otts plated four in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead. After a leadoff double and RBI single, another double, single, and walk loaded the bases. Marglin cleared the bases with a triple to push the L&C advantage of 6-1.

Whitworth responded and cut the lead in the fifth. Tessa Hahn led off the inning with a single and Natalie Singer followed with a triple to right field to score Hahn. Kendel Sage hit a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to trim the deficit to three, but the Pirates couldn't get any closer.

Reagan Ellis led the Bucs with two hits. Madison Sanchez (0-2) pitched the full six innings for the Pirates and finished with six runs and six strikeouts.

O'Leary (2-2) earned the win after allowing four hits, one run and strikeout seven in 6.0 innings. Kara Kahahawai pitched one inning of relief and gave up two runs. The first four hitters in the River Otter lineup each had two hits.

Game 2: Lewis & Clark 8, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.)

Lewis & Clark posted seven runs in the second inning and Sammy Santa Ana held the Whitworth offense to just two hits.

The River Otter offense scored a run in the first with a sacrifice fly before breaking the game open in the second. After loading the bases, Kodie Ancheta hit a double in the gap to give L&C a four-run lead. An RBI single and sac fly pushed the advantage to six before a two-run double put the Pirates down 8-0.

Ellis singled and Lizzy Bradford hit the Pirates' second triple of the day as the two Whitworth hits. Camryn Sage drew a walk as the only other Pirate to reach base.

Teeghan Reams (0-3) started in the circle and allowed seven hits. Lina Schwippert pitched 1.2 innings of relief and struck out four of the five hitters she faced.

Santa Ana (1-0) struck out eight in five innings for the River Otters.
