SPOKANE, Wash. – Aiden Chase's diving save in the final minute kept Whitworth on top in a 1-0 win over visiting Pacific University in Sunday's Northwest Conference men's soccer match at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (1-1-1, 1-0-1 NWC) earned their first win of the season while the Boxers fell to 1-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the NWC.
Whitworth came out firing in the first half, taking seven shots and holding the Boxers to none after 45 minutes of play. The Bucs capitalized and broke through with the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute. Dominic Gusman dribbled past a defender toward the goal line and crossed the ball toward the middle of the box. Jordan Voigt deflected the ball to Connor Bly, who spun over his left shoulder and fired the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Shots were even in the second half as Pacific kept the pressure on in hopes of an equalizer, but Whitworth held on behind the heroic efforts of goalkeeper Aiden Chase. In the 71st minute, Caden Matsumoto collected a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a hard shot that Chase knocked down and covered.
The Pirates had a chance to put the game away in the 80th minute when Johny Cortez used his heel to punch the ball towards an open net. A Boxer defender slid in and kicked the ball out of play to preserve the one-goal deficit.
Chase's third save of the game was a big one, as the ball was flicked toward the middle of the box and found the head of Pacific's Elliot Morgan. Morgan directed a strong header toward the right side of the goal before Chase dove to his left and made the two-handed stop to ice the game.
Whitworth had a 13-6 advantage in shots and put six on target to Pacific's three. Noah Whitman led the Pirate attack with two shots on goal. Johnny Finnegan and Gusman led the way in protecting the shutout in the defensive third.
Kobi Miyamoto made four saves for the Boxers.
The Pirates will host Whitman on Wednesday at 3:00pm before heading to Linfield on Sunday.
