Whitman bests Pirate men 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Led by Lucas McAllister's hat trick, Whitman College bested Whitworth 3-1 in a midweek Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates fell to 1-2-1 overall (1-1-1 NWC) while the Blues (4-0-3) earned their third consecutive conference victory.

Whitman opened the match with early pressure in its attacking third, resulting in McAllister's first goal. McAllister boxed out his opponent and collected a pass before flicking the ball into the top of the net from close range. Just over three minutes later, a pass to the middle of the box was deflected to McAllister, who turned to his right and netted his second goal. Soon after, he found the bottom left corner of the net again to give the Blues a commanding three-goal lead before the 10-minute mark.

Despite a 10-4 advantage in first-half shots for Whitman, Whitworth battled in the second frame and put up eight shots to the Blues' four. The persistence paid off with a goal from Dominic Gusman who flicked in a deflected header to get the Pirates on the board.

Whitworth finished the match with three shots on goal and four corner kicks. Whitman put five shots on target and forced one corner kick.

Gusman, Noah Whitman and Jack Eschliman each had a shot on goal for the Pirates. Lucas Diaz provided a spark and led the team with four shots.

Niclas Isensee made two saves in 69 minutes for Whitman, and Tait Whittemore allowed the Whitworth goal. Aiden Chase made two saves in net for the Bucs.

The Pirates head to Linfield on Sunday for their first NWC road match of the season.
