MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Linfield University in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (5-12 overall, 5-6 NWC) fell to fifth in the conference standings with the loss. The Wildcats moved to 3-8 in the NWC (3-13 overall).
Linfield swept the doubles matches to earn the first match point. Matthew Morrison and Ryan Ashley fell 6-3 in the No. 1 match before a 6-4 Wildcat win in the second position secured the point.
After winning five singles matches in their first matchup, the Bucs split the six matches with the Wildcats. Morrison fell 6-4, 6-1 to Brooks Lerfald in the No 1. position, an opponent he defeated earlier this season. Linfield clinched the match with a pair of wins in the third and fourth match over Easton Weir and Matt Froslan. Ashley earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win and Colby Cinqmars downed his opponent 6-2, 6-4. Matt Hossack closed the match with a three-set win in the No. 5 position. Henry Preacher missed his ninth match of the season.
The Pirates will look to get back on track at George Fox on Sunday at 11:00 am.
