SPOKANE, Wash. – Another big meet and another strong performance for the Whitworth University track and field team on Friday at the Jeff Rahn Classic.
Nearly 800 athletes and over a dozen teams competed in a meet named in honor of the Pirate All-American and long-time assistant coach for track and cross country.
Amblessed Okemgbo and Devyn Chelin won events for Whitworth. Okemgbo won the women's discus with a toss of 142'-2", while Chelin took the women's javelin with a throw of 133'-1", which now ranks 11th in NCAA Division III and first in the Northwest Conference.
Madison Carr was runner-up in the women's shot put in 44'-0", a mark that also moved her to 11th in NCAA Division III and second in the NWC – only behind Okemgbo. She was also third in the hammer throw with a distance of 162'-5".
Briana Tira had a big day, clearing 5'-6" in the high jump to finish second, which leads the Northwest Conference and is tied for fourth in NCAA Div. III. She was also fourth in the long jump with a personal record mark of 17'-7.5".
In the women's pole vault, Evie Bradbury cleared a season-best 10'-9" to finish eighth, while Claire Nardella was ninth with a PR height of 10'-3.25".
Tira shone on the track as well, posting a personal record of 12.79 in the 100-meter dash to finish 10th. Jordyn Lungo took 11th in the 200-meters with a season-best time of 25.79.
Tira, Lungo, Margaret Byle and Isabella Pereira went 48.14 in the women's 4x100 meter relay, a season-best for the Pirates and a time that now leads the Northwest Conference.
Camden Schmidt had a big day on the track for Whitworth's men. He demolished his personal record in the 200-meters while finishing third place in 21.66. That time now leads the NWC. He was also sixth in the 100-dash with a PR of 10.98, a time that currently is second in the NWC.
The Pirate men had a good showing in throwing events as well. Eddie Vue was fifth in the men's discus with a distance of 167'-9", a distance that leads the NWC and ranks fifth in Division III. He was also seventh in the shot put (47'-5").
Adam Sessions was fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 174'-3", which is a personal record that now leads the conference.
Cody Wheeler was runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 186'-11" and he set a PR in the shot put (45'-1.5".
A handful of Whitworth Pirates will compete in the Northwest Conference multi-event championships early next week at George Fox University. Three men are entered in the decathlon and three women in the heptathlon.
The rest of the team will compete at the Whitworth Twilight and Alumni meet on Thursday, April 17th.
