TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates battled to a 4-3 win over Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates moved to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the NWC. The Loggers (1-7, 1-6 NWC) dropped their 19th consecutive match against Whitworth.
UPS took the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, but the Bucs claimed the doubled point with wins in the second and third slots. Ryan Ashley and Matt Froslan secured a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 position. Matt Hossack and Easton Weir clinched the point by the same score.
Whitworth took three of six singles matches, two of which were three-set wins. Landon Labrie claimed the first Pirate singles point with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 6 position. Matthew Morrison fell in the No. 1 match but Froslan gave the Bucs an advantage with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. After Puget Sound's Jackson Stumpf took down Hossack 6-2, 6-4, Will Church snuck out a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3 win over Ashley to knot the match score at three.
The match came down to the No. 3 slot between Weir and Carson Ward. Weir dropped the first set 4-6, then stormed back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 and clinch the match for the Pirates.
Whitworth will host Whitman on Saturday, March 15th to begin the second half of NWC play before Lewis-Clark St. College visits on Sunday.
