SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates fell 6-1 to Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Saturday afternoon at Scotford Tennis Center.
The Blues remained perfect in conference play (8-0, 8-3 overall), while the Pirates moved to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the NWC.
Whitman took the doubles point with two wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to start the match. Matt Hossack and Easton Weir beat their opponents 6-4 to give the Pirates a win in the third doubles match. Henry Preacher paired with Matthew Morrison in the No. 1 doubles match, but Preacher did not compete in singles after missing last weekend's matches.
The first four singles matches went to the Blues. Ryan Ashley won his first set 6-3 in the No. 2 position, but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-3. Hossack battled to a third set in the No. 5 match but could not come away with a tiebreaking win (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4)). Landon LaBrie earned a Pirate point after Whitman's Braeden Thomas retired from the match.
Whitworth will battle Lewis-Clark St. College in a non-conference rematch at Scotford Tennis Center on Sunday at 3:00 pm.
