TACOMA, Wash. – A pared-down Whitworth track and field team performed strongly on Saturday at the Peyton-Shotwell Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
Despite much of the team being away for Spring Break, the Pirate men got four individual victories and several season-bests and personal records on Saturday.
Cooper Rolfs set the tone with a victory in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 49.72 seconds. He also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.94).
Isaak Akiyama won the men's 800 meters with a season-best mark of 1:56.03 and also took second in the 1,500 meters with another season-best mark (4:03.05).
Also on the track, Cameron Lantagne was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best mark of 57.77, while James Dugenet finished third in the 5,000 meters with a personal record time of 15:19.81.
Luke Davis had a big day in two field events. He finished first in the shot put with a season-best toss of 48'-9" and also was runner-up in the discus (142'-6").
Richard Alsept led a 1-2-3 finish for Whitworth's men in the high jump, clearing 6'-3.25". Andrew Strawn was runner-up in the pole vault (13'-11.25").
Devyn Chelin had the only victory for the Pirate women after she threw the javelin 130'-1", a season-best mark.
Whitworth's women had three runner-up finishes. Ashlyn Dary was second in the 1,500 (4:57.80) and sixth in the 800 (2:32.01). Both times were season-best marks. Marlee Paget finished second in the 400 hurdles with a season-best time of 1:09.37. Jordyn Lungo was runner-up in the 100 meter hurdles (12.48).
The Pirate track and field teams will return to action, and be back at full strength, on April 4th (Friday) when the Bucs host the Whitworth Peace Meet.
