SPOKANE, Wash. – Kyle Memarian homered twice and Quentin O'Connor pitched eight strong innings to lead Whitworth to a 10-4 win over visiting George Fox on Sunday afternoon at Merkel Field, giving the Pirates a win in the Northwest Conference baseball series.
Whitworth improved to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in the NWC with a second straight win in a three-game conference set. The Bruins dropped to 10-10, 4-5 after coming in having won six of eight games.
As they did in the series opener on Saturday, the Pirates started fast offensively, scoring five in the first inning and four in the second for a quick 9-0 lead.
Most of that damage came courtesy of Memarian, who drilled a three-run home run in the first and a two-run shot in the second. Those were his first two home runs of the season. Ty Quiggle had a two-run single in the second inning.
That was more than enough run support for O'Connor (4-1), who went eight innings in the game. He allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
The only damage the Bruins did against O'Connor was a two-run home run from Carson Coulter in the top of the fourth inning.
Aidan Morrison scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Carson Coffield in the bottom of the fourth.
The Pirate defense was stellar throughout the contest, turning three double plays and avoiding any errors.
The Bruins scored their final two runs in the ninth off Tyler VanCise.
Whitworth will look for a third straight series victory when the Pirates travel to Pacific (Ore.) next weekend.
