FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A seven-run second inning provided the early support for another strong outing by starting pitcher AJ Woodward as Whitworth opened a three-game Northwest Conference baseball series with a 13-2 win at Pacific University on Saturday evening at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Austin Paul went 3-3, scored three times, and drove in three runs from his leadoff spot in the order to help the Pirates improve to 15-7 overall and 6-4 in the NWC. The Boxers, who had won five of six games coming into the weekend, fell to 5-11, 5-5.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11:00 am.
Whitworth scored all seven runs in the second inning after two were out. Dominic Giusti drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Paul, who leads the NWC in bases on balls in 2025, followed with a walk to force in the game's first run. Aidan Morrison then clubbed a bases clearing double that increased the lead to 4-0. Caleb Gray doubled to drive in Morrison and Carson Coffield drilled his fourth home run of the season for the 7-0 start.
The Pirates' four-run fifth inning also came with two outs. Giusti doubled with the bases loaded to score two and Paul followed with a two-run single to increase the lead to 11-0.
Defensive miscues allowed Whitworth to score the final two runs in the seventh. Kyle Memarian, who led off the inning with a single, eventually scored on an error at third base. Kevin Corder scored from third when Junior Garcia was able to get into a run down between first and second base.
Pacific had only four hits through six innings against Woodward and didn't get on the board until the bottom of the seventh. Riz Collado scored on a sacrifice fly off the batt of Trevor Kazahaya. Collado added a sacrifice fly for the Boxers in the eighth.
Memarian went 4-5 in the game and scored three times, while Corder finished 3-4 and also had three runs.
Woodward (4-1) allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings. He did not strike out or walk a batter in an efficient effort that only took 77 pitches. Nathaniel Kurano finished up the final two frames.
