Pirate women dominate Sam Adams Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women dominated the field events on Tuesday in the Pirates' first home outdoor meet of the season during the Sam Adams Classic at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

Whitworth took first place in six women's field events and second in two others against Lewis-Clark State College and the Spokane Colleges.

Isabella Pereira established a personal record while winning the long jump with a mark of 17'-4.25".  Similarly, Briana Tira hit a PR while winning the triple jump (36'-5.5").  Cadence Lorenz was right behind Tira with a PR distance of 33'-6.75".  Lorenz also won the high jump with a season-best height of 5'-0.25".

Claire Nardella made it a Pirate sweep of the vertical and horizontal jumps with her winning PR in the pole vault (9'-7.75").

Amblessed Okemgbo, a 2024 All-American in the discus, won the event on Tuesday with a mark of 141'-11".  Madison Carr won the shot put with a distance of 41'-3.25". 

The Pirate women finished 2-3-4 in the hammer throw.  Izzy Carpenter was runner-up with a PR of 145'-7", Carr was third (141-10) and Kylie Loveless was fourth with her own PR (137'-8"). 

Devyn Chelin took second in the javelin with a season-best mark of 125'-6".

Led by the relays, Whitworth's women did well on the track as well.  The 4x100 relay of Tira, Jordyn Lungo, Margaret Byle and Pereira posted a season-best time of 48.85 seconds.  The 4x400 relay of Hannah Marcoe, Byle, Lulu Brady and Marlee Paget ran a season-best time of 4:09.08.

Brady won the 800-meter run with a personal record time of 2:21.27.  Paget won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.06.  Lungo (26.09), Pereira (26.39) and Byle (26.98) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.

The final women's team scores were: Whitworth 78, Spokane 57, LCSC 12.

Whitworth's men got three victories on the track, led by London Haley's personal record in the 5,000 meters in 14:49.18.  Jake Ireton won the 1,500-meter run in 4:02.53, while Connor Hylton won the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.37. 

Luke Davis got the only win in a field event for the Pirate men.  He took first in the shot put (47'-5.25") with Eddie Vu in second place (46'-2.75").  Vu was also second in the discus (151'-9") with Davis third (146'-10"). 

Adam Sessions was runner-up in the hammer throw (164'-7") while Cody Wheeler was third (161'-9").  Jared McCrory finished second in the pole vault with a season-best height of 14'-6".

With Okemgbo headed to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend in Rochester, N.Y. to compete in the shot put, the rest of the Pirates will be back in action on Thursday and Friday, March 20-21 at the Buc Scoring Invite.

The men's final team scores: Spokane 65, Whitworth 48, LCSC 42.
