TACOMA, Wash. – Paced by a school record and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in the women's 200 breaststroke, the Whitworth University swimming teams rolled to team titles at the 2025 UPS Logger Invitational on Sunday.
Megan Bonikowsky's school record in the women's 200-yard breaststroke was the highlight for a women's team that won the trophy by just over 100 points ahead of Simon Fraser University (B.C.).
Bonikowsky dropped ten seconds from her original seed time and nearly four seconds from her morning preliminary swim to post a 2:19.65 to in the 200 breaststroke. Her time broke the previous school record of 2:21.58 set by Jamie Siegler in 2020. Molly Konop was fifth in the event in 2:25.83.
Bonikowsky led off the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, the meet's final event, helping the Pirate A relay to a second place finish. Bonikowsky was followed by Makhaela Parrish, Grace Esteban and Paige Dangleis, posting a time of 3:35.57. The women's B relay finished seventh and the C relay took eighth.
Maria Girbacea and Isabella Hoopes were the only competitors in the women's 100-yard individual medley, finishing first and second, respectively.
Kallie Badry was the runner-up in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:29.56, with Alisa King fourth (18:33.10) and Parrish fifth (18:37.87).
Esteban took fourth place in the women's 50-yard butterfly in 26.29 with Girbacea fifth (27.05).
Hailey Freeman posted a third-place finish in the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.64 and Mija Hood took sixth (2:19.52).
Paige Dangleis finished third in the women's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.17. Paige Orlando and Parrish tied for first in the consolation final to split ninth place in 55.56.
In the women's 200-yard butterfly, Hoopes took seventh place (2:19.65) and Esteban was eighth (2:19.88).
The final women's team scores were: Whitworth 1157, Simon Fraser 1054, Puget Sound 790, Southwestern Oregon CC 421, Coll. of Idaho 52, Simpson (Calif.) 4.
Depth was the difference for the Pirate men's team, leading to a 233.5-point margin over SFU.
Whitworth had four of the top nine finishers in two events on Sunday: the 1650 freestyle and the 200 backstroke.
The Bucs scored 57 points in the 1650 free, led by Jack Sachtjen's third place finish in 16:03.26. Ben Butler took fourth in 16:08.33 and Braiden Alexander was fifth in 16:13.55. Trenten Schmidt touched seventh (16:46.06).
Kai Jon Hayashia was the winner of the men's 100 I.M. in 53.04. Mason Groth was fourth (53.89) and Kian Vae'Ena was eighth (57.90).
Henry Brewster took third place in both the 50 butterfly and 200 butterfly. He went 22.84 in the sprint distance and 1:51.86 in the longer race. Groth took sixth in the 50 fly (23.20). Hayashida was fifth (1:54.43) and Alexander won the consolation final (1:58.61) in the 200 butterfly.
Samuel Draeger finished fifth in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.39. Vince McNabb was seventh (1:57.27), Vladyslav Danylyuk took eighth (1:58.36) and Austin Elwyn won the consolation final for ninth (1:54.51).
Nathanael Van Liew sprinted to a time of 46.61 to take fourth in the 100 freestyle, with Blake Swenson eighth (48.07).
Alex Popov touched fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.50 and Preston Wolf was eighth (2:09.81).
The Whitworth A relay of Emmett Scott, Hayashida, Swenson and Van Leiw rallied to a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.47. The B relay took fifth.
The final men's scores were: Whitworth 1064, SFU 831.5, Puget Sound 791.5, SWOCC 731, C of Idaho 260, Simpson 27.
