TACOMA, Wash. – Led by Kallie Badry's first place finish in the women's 500-yard freestyle on Friday night, the Whitworth women and men lead the team standings after the first day of the 2025 Logger Invitational, hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
The Pirate women lead Simon Fraser (B.C.) by 23 points, while the men hold a 30.5-point lead over SFU. The meet continues on Saturday and Sunday and concludes the fall half of the 2025-26 schedule.
Whitworth advanced five swimmers to the finals of the women's 500-yard freestyle and Badry touched first with a season-best time of 5:08.70. Megan Bonikowsky took third in 5:11.76. Alisa King (5:25.17) was fifth, Makhaela Parrish (5:26.26) was sixth and Hailey Freeman (5:31.63) was eighth.
Paige Dangleis was runner-up in the women's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.07, while Isabella was right behind in third place in 2:09.15. Bonikowsky took fifth (2:10.22).
Grace Esteban was the Pirates' top-finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, taking fourth in 24.58, a time that dropped over seven-tenths from the preliminary heat. Mija Hood took fifth place in the women's 50-yard backstroke in 28.91.
The women's team finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Dangleis, Paige Orlando, Esteban and Mya Granger went 1:39.30. The Whitworth B team was fifth in 1:39.98 and the C relay was eighth (1:45.40).
The Pirates also took third in the women's 400-yard medley relay. Dangleis, Molly Konop, Esteban and Granger finished in 4:01.44. The Whitworth B team (4:06.84) was fourth and the C relay (4:17.37) was eighth.
The women's team scores through Friday are: Whitworth 381, Simon Fraser 358, Puget Sound 235, Southwestern Oregon CC 93, College of Idaho 9.
Superior depth has led the Pirate men to the top of the standings, even without an event victory.
Like their counterparts, the Whitworth men advanced five swimmers to the finals of the 500 freestyle. Jake Sachtjen was third in 4:41.46, Ben Butler was fourth (4:42.19), Preston Wolf was fifth (4:46.09), Braiden Alexander sixth (4:46.28) and Trenten Schmidt seventh (4:51.07).'
Alex Popov took third place in the 200 I.M. with a time of 1:55.31, followed closely by Kai Jon Hayashida in fourth (1:55.74). Samuel Draeger finished seventh in 1:56.11, while Austin Elwyn won the consolation final in 1:55.92.
Nathanael Van Liew was third in the 50 freestyle in 20.71, while Parker Dangleis took fifth (20.91). Blake Swenson took third in the 50 backstroke (24.07).
The Pirate men took third in the 200 freestyle relay. Van Liew, Swenson, Mason Groth and Danglies sprinted to a time of 1:24.00. The B relay took sixth in 1:26.99.
Whitworth finished fourth in the 400 medley relay. Hayashida, Popov, Henry Brewster and Dangleis posted a time of 3:23.22. The B relay finished fifth in 3:31.06.
The men's scores through Friday are: Whitworth 305.5, SFU 275, Puget Sound 225.5, SWOCC 205, Col. of Idaho 71.
