TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitworth University swimming teams extended their leads in the team standings and continued to impress on day two of the Logger Invitational at University Place Aquatic Club on Saturday.
The Pirate women extended their lead to 61 behind an individual win from Isabella Hoopes and multiple high-scoring finishes from Molly Konop and Paige Dangleis.
Hoopes touched first with a time of 4:36.88 in a dominant 400 IM for Whitworth. Kallie Badry continued her standout weekend with a third-place finish (4:38.77), followed by Hailey Freeman in fourth (4:45.07) and Alisa King in fifth (4:53.32).
Konop took home a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.63 before finishing third in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.64).
Paige Dangleis earned a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.20 and took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.92).
The Whitworth women placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.55) to start the day and second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:50.31) in the day's final race.
Women's team scores through Saturday are: Whitworth 819, Simon Fraser 758, Puget Sound 520, Southwestern Oregon CC 282, College of Idaho 31.
Led by six top three finishes and an individual win from Alex Popov, the Pirate men now hold a 169-point lead over second place Simon Fraser University.
Whitworth earned two top three finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke. Popov earned the victory with a time of 25.44 and Nathanael Van Liew finished third (25.91) in a very tight race. Popov also finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.98).
Henry Brewster led the Bucs in the 100-yard butterfly with a third-place finish (50.44). Mason Groth (50.86) and Austin Elwyn (51.59) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Parker Dangleis touched second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40. 47. Kai Hyashida placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, just .06 seconds from another top three finish.
Four Pirates finished in the top eight of the 400-yard IM, led by Jake Sachtjen who finished in fourth (4:10.91). Samuel Draeger took fifth (4:11.62), Braiden Alexander placed seventh (4:12.90) and Preston Wolf touched eighth (4:20. 32).
The Whitworth men also placed second in both the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.82) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:00.28).
The men's team scores through Saturday are: Whitworth 713.5, Simon Fraser 544.5, UPS 533, SWOCC 494, Col. of Idaho 168, Simpson 21.
Whitworth will wrap up the Logger Invitational on Sunday.
