SPOKANE, Wash. – A first half goal by Beckett Arthur stood up to lift Whitworth to a 1-0 win over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (3-2, 1-0) earned the win in their NWC opener while the Bruins (4-1, 0-1) suffered their first loss of the season.
Arthur scored his goal from a crossing pass by Dominic Gusman that initially appeared deflected by a GFU defender. But Arthur got his right foot on the ball for his first goal of the season. The Pirate senior had not played yet after dealing with an injury during the non-conference schedule.
Aidan Chase made the score stand up by making five staves in the contest. Even though Whitworth outshot the Bruins 15-9 overall, GFU had a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal.
Justin Huttinger made three saves for the Bruins.
Whitworth will try to complete the weekend sweep on Sunday against Pacific (Ore.).
