SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth men's tennis picked up its first Northwest Conference win of the season over Puget Sound 7-2 on Sunday at Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (2-6, 1-1 NWC) had the match clinched after winning the first five matchups, and they've now won 18 straight matches over Puget Sound (1-5, 0-1 NWC) dating back to 2012.
The #1 duo of Nathna Tjelle and Henry Preacher won 8-2 to start off the day, #2 Payton Romey and Ethan Warring followed that with an 8-4 win before the #3 duo of Colby Cinqmars and Jess Weaver completed the sweep with an 8-7 (7-4) victory.
In singles, #3 Ethan Warring topped Carson Ward 6-0, 6-1 before Tjelle clinched the win for the Pirates with a hard-fought win over Noah Henderson 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. #4 Preacher took care of Will Church 6-0, 6-4 and Weaver claimed the final win of the day, knocking off Matthew Zou 6-1, 6-4.
The Pirates won 13 of 18 sets in the comfortable win. They will be on the road at Linfield and Lewis & Clark next weekend, seeking to move up in the conference standings.
