ORLANDO, Fla. – Whitworth men's tennis lost a 5-4 match for the second straight day, this time against DePauw at the USTA campus in Orlando.
The Pirates (3-10, 2-2 NWC) have been competitive through three matches in Florida, but have yet to get a win as they've fallen a set short now in two straight matches. DePauw (6-6) has now won all three of its matches this week.
In doubles, #2 Matt Froslan and Ethan Warring were the only duo to get a win as they defeated Ryan McCook and Wils Warren 8-6. Whitworth's #1 and #3 duo were beaten 8-3 and 8-5.
Whitworth's #1 Nathan Tjelle, #2 Warring, and #3 Henry Preacher all got wins to kick off singles for the Pirates. Preacher finished first knocking off Evan Uhl 6-4, 6-1 and Tjelle followed that beating Samuele Pia 6-4, 6-3. Warring gave Whitworth it's fourth tally with a three-set victory over #2 Scott Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). But DePauw snatched the win in the back half of the rotation as #4 Grayson Zylstra beat Jess Weaver in the finale of the match 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4), and 1-0 (10-6).
The narrow loss sends Whitworth into its last chance for a win tomorrow, they'll face St. Olaf in the Florida finale before heading back to conference play against Pacific, George Fox, and Willamette on April 5-7.
