Women's tennis heads to sunshine state

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth women's tennis will head to the sunshine state this week for a full slate of action. They will take on SUNY New Paltz, Augustana, Kalamazoo, and St. Olaf on March 25-28.

The Pirates: Whitworth (6-5, 4-2 NWC) is coming off a split on the road where they knocked off Willamette 7-2 on Saturday before falling 8-1 at Pacific on Sunday. The Pirates had won three straight NWC matches before their loss to Pacific, but they come out of the weekend fourth in the conference standings.

Gracie Smyley and Jordan Turner-Esposito lead the team in singles wins; Smyley has a 5-4 record (all in the #1 spot), and Turner holds a 5-3 record (5-2 in the #4 slot). Olivia Corbett and Morgan McArthur have posted a 4-0 record together (all in the #3 spot), and the top duo of Smyley and Clara Todd are 4-3.

The Opponents: SUNY New Paltz (7-2, 7-0 SUNYAC) comes into the week on a four-match win streak, and an undefeated conference record. The Hawks are led by Justine Stanejko who's 8-2 in the #1 slot, she's won all eight of those in two sets. Onalee Batcheller represents the #2 spot and she's 6-3. New Paltz is coached by Rob Bruley who's led the program since 1998, Bruley has led New Paltz to a first or second place finish for 21 straight years. This will be Whitworth's second meeting with SUNY in program history, the Pirates won the first 9-0 in 2012, that match was also in Orlando.

Augustana (6-8, 4-4 CCIW) has lost four of five coming into the week, Whitworth will be their fourth and final match in Orlando (it will be Whitworth's second of the week). Anna-Maria Huebel (5-6) is the #1 for the Vikings, and Caitlyn Hanulikova is 9-2 in the #2 spot. Hanulikova and Hannah Colbert play together as the top duo for Augustana, they're 10-4 this season. The Vikings are coached by David Desimone who's in his third season. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Kalamazoo (5-3, 1-0 conf) started the season 4-0 before dropping three straight matches against top-20 opponents (#18 Kenyon, #17 Case Western, and #20 Denison). The Hornets are led by Juliana Pullen (5-4) and Maddie Hurley (4-8) who both split time in the top singles spot, the two are 8-6 together in doubles. Kalamazoo is coached by Mark Murphy who's led the program since 2010, he won regional coach of the year in 2014 and 2016. This will be Whitworth's first-ever meeting against the Hornets.

St. Olaf (6-0, 3-0 MIAC) is undefeated heading into the week, the Pirates will be their fifth match of the week. Ohla Zubarieva is 5-1 as the #1 for the Oles, and she's 8-1 in her last ten matches dating back to 2023. Jane Spading is 6-0 in the #3 spot and plays with Zubarieva in doubles at times. St. Olaf is coached by Joey Kronzer is in his first season as head coach after being promoted from assistant in July. Whitworth is 0-1 all time against St. Olaf, they lost 6-3 in 2019 in Orlando.

Looking ahead: Whitworth will return from Orlando to host George Fox on April 6 in an important Northwest Conference match.
