Whitworth rallies past Redlands; splits second series

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Whitworth University wrapped up Saturday in California with a split at Redlands,  rallying to win the first in extra innings 7-5 before dropping the second 9-4.

The Pirates wrap up their opening road trip on Sunday with a doubleheader at La Verne beginning at 10 a.m.

Game 1 – Whitworth 7, Redlands 5   (nine innings)

Mackenzie Nine doubled in the seventh to score two, Corinne Vasiloff pitched nine innings, and Whitworth knocked off Redlands 7-5 with three more runs in the ninth.

Vasiloff threw 132 pitches and allowed two earned runs in a nine-inning complete game. She struck out two batters, and leaned on her defense for 17 groundouts.

Julia Dillon hit her second home run of the season, a shot down the left field line to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth inning.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Nine stepped up with a double to score Katie McKinnis and Jessica Rusconi and send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth, Johnson reached home on a fielders choice to break the tie. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Katlyn Gandara was replaced by Paige Ellinger on the mound. Ellinger's pitch went wild allowing McKinnis and Rusconi to score again.

Gandara pitched eight innings and gave up four runs, but was credited with the loss. Vasiloff (1-1) earned her first win of the season on the mound

Game 2 – Redlands 9, Whitworth 4

The Redlands offense racked up 14 hits, six hitters batted in runs as they broke open an 8-0 lead through four innings to even the series.

Momi Lyman pitched six innings and gave up seven earned runs, the Pirate defense committed three errors. Lyman was credited with her first loss of the season.

Six different hitters knocked in runs for Redlands, Magcale singled in the first and doubled in the third to help Redlands to an 8-0 lead.

Facing a possible mercy rule Makena Hofford singled to drive in Jazz Johnson before Reagan Ellis tagged a double through deep center driving in another pair of runs to cut the deficit to 8-3.

Whitworth added a run in the sixth after Kelly Hruza's hit to short stop was overthrown, allowing Johnson to score.
