CLAREMONT, Calif. – Whitworth University opened the 2024 softball season with a split at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon. The Pirates dropped the first game 5-0 but won the second game 4-2 behind the solid pitching of Momi Lyman and two home runs.
Whitworth continues the season opening trip to Southern California with a doubleheader at Redlands on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.

Sagehen starting pitcher Devin Waddell threw a complete-game one-hitter to give Pomona-Pitzer (1-3) its first victory of the season.

Pomona-Pitzer got two runs off Whitworth starting pitcher Corinne Vasiloff in the third on Emily Hurtado's two-run single. The Sagehens added three more in the fifth, including a two-run double by Natalie Marguia.
Waddell also went 2-4 at the plate to support her cause.
Jazz Johnson had the Pirates' only hit of the game.
Vasiloff (0-1) allowed five earned runs on ten hits and two walks in 5.0 innings. She struck out one batter. Reiss McIntyre worked a hitless inning in relief for Whitworth.
Game 2 – Whitworth 4, Pomona-Pitzer 2
Julia Dillon and Haley Montoya hit home runs in support of Lyman's complete-game effort in the Pirates' first win of the season.
Whitworth started early as Dillon, the game's third batter, hit a two-run shot in the top of the first to drive in Montoya. Kelly Hruza drew a bases-loaded walk later in the first to score Taylor Hofheins.
The Sagehens got two runs back in the bottom of the second on another two-run double from Marguia.
Montoya's solo shot in the fourth gave the Bucs a needed insurance run.
Lyman (1-0) scattered ten hits but got five key strikeouts. She left the bases loaded in the first and P-P had two runners on base when she ended the rally in the second.
Erika Rivera (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in 1.1 innings. Nyla Springer went the rest of the way, giving up only one run on four hits.
