Bucs bounce back in 3-1 win over Blues

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two second half goals from Cole Friesen gave Whitworth a 3-1 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates (7-6-2 overall, 5-4-2 NWC) split the season series with the Blues (8-5-2, 5-4-2).

Whitworth got on the board in the 14th minute when Jordan Voigt headed in a well-placed free kick from Dominic Gusman. The second half began with a quick goal from Cole Friesen in the 45th minute from an assist by Beckett Arthur. Friesen netted his second of the game and ninth of the season in the 65th minute. Jacob Burrill would score in the 84th minute for Whitman.

The Pirates and the Blues each finished the game with 13 shots. Whitman had an edge in shots on-goal 9-6, however Whitworth took advantage of its opportunities while holding the Blues to a single goal. Aiden Chase contributed six saves for the Pirates.

Whitworth coach Kevin Moon was very happy with his team's response after two losses last weekend. "We started with high energy and kept it the whole match," Moon said. "I am excited for the guys because if they play with this intent, it should impact our results in a positive way."

Whitworth will look to build off this win when it hosts Linfield on Saturday in Spokane.
