Whitworth men hold off Whitman 3-2

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth jumped out to an early lead and held on to defeat visiting Whitman 3-2 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Tuesday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates (3-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 NWC) converted their penalty chance, while GK Anton Dershem stopped the Blues' (1-5-1, 1-2) penalty attempt in the first half, proving to be the difference in the match.

Whitworth scored in the eighth minute when Dominic Gusman drove the right side of the box and delivered a cross to Becket Arthur, who laid out to head the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.

The Pirates took advantage of an own-goal in the 16th minute to double their lead.  Whitworth was applying heavy offensive pressure when a sideways clearing attempt by a Whitman defender bounced off goalkeeper Bernie Jones and into the net.

Whitman had a chance to halve the lead in the 23rd minute when Dershem committed a foul inside the box.  He made up for the mistake by stopping Edwin Romero's shot by diving to his right.

The Blues kept the pressure up and got on the board in the 41st minute when Lucas McAllister completed a counter attack off a pass by Jacob Burrill.

Whitman had a 17-7 advantage in shots in the first half, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, but the Pirates were more effective at finishing their opportunities.

Whitworth cleaned up its defense in the second half, limiting the Blues to only two shots in the period.  Meanwhile the Pirates retook a two-goal lead in the 74th minute.  Christian Pumpelly was fouled in the penalty area and defender Chris Barry stepped up to take the PK.  His initial shot was saved by Jones, but the keeper was unable to hold onto the ball and Barry pounced on the rebound to score his first goal of the season.

Whitman made the Pirates sweat out the final 90 seconds of the match after Noa Taylor headed in a long crossing pass from Oliver Dickson.

Dershem finished with six saves in the first 45 minutes for Whitworth.  Aiden Chase played the second half and allowed one goal without a save.  Jones stopped two shots for Whitman.

The Pirates ended an eight-match winless skid (0-7-1) against the Blues that dated back to 2019.
