Shaporda strikes early to lift Whitworth to 1-0 win

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Eric Shaporda scored a crafty goal in the 11th minute, the Pirate defense didn't allow a single shot on goal, and Whitworth got a 1-0 win at Pacific on Sunday.

Shaporda created the scoring chance himself, flying down the left side past a Pacific defender, evading the Boxers' keeper before sliding the shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Pirates an early lead.

Whitworth (9-4-3 overall, 7-2-3 NWC) was effective playing with the lead as they shut down Pacific's offensive attack. The Boxers (3-7-6 overall, 3-6-3 NWC) did not record a shot on goal as Aiden Chase and Anton Dersham were credited with the joint shutout for the second straight match.

The Pirates outshot Pacific 12-1 (7-0 in shots on goal), and the Boxers didn't record their first shot until the 72nd minute.

Cole Friesen tallied five shots, three on goal, but couldn't manage to score his 20th of the season. Arthur Beckett and Shaporda each recorded three shots but were also held scoreless.

Whitworth will play their final home games of the season next weekend, hosting Linfield and Willamette. Pacific will hit the road to play Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.
